 ArtsLab:

Artists across all disciplines frequently inquire where they might find professional work and practice development workshops designed from a creative and not just business perspective.  The Depot has discovered that artists want to develop skills in areas such as networking through social media, promotion, running a small business, goal setting and presentation, but they want to do this in an environment that respects and approaches these subjects from a creative perspective.  The Depot has developed a series of workshops through its ArtsLab programme in Devonport that are designed for creative people seeking to develop their arts practice and generate income.

February & March Workshops:

New Media and Legal Issues One Day Seminar – 15 February  $30

New media expert Lewis Bostock demonstrates how to use social media networking to expand your client base and promote your work.  David McLaughlin, entertainment lawyer specialising in the field of intellectual property, advises and answers your questions on issues of copyright and privacy.

Creative Practitioners Two Day Workshop – 29 February & 1 March ($80)

This interactive, intensive workshop will provide you with the tools to establish and maintain your creative vision.  You will learn about setting realistic and achievable goals, creative time management and speaking confidently and articulately about your arts practice. Guest speakers give practical advice on successfully taking on challenges and opportunities as a creative practitioner.

Business of Arts Three Day Workshop – 12, 13, 14 March - ($150)

An intensive and lively programme in which artists learn how to set themselves up as a business.  Practical knowledge and skills in GST, tax, costing & pricing structures, book keeping, marketing and writing a business plan are provided with manual and XL spreadsheets.

The programme is facilitated by experienced and entertaining company director Frances Denz.

Depot Sound Internship.

Project Abstract/Brief.
Within the contemporary music industry there are many access
points with regard to employment and sustainability so it is the
fundamental brief of the training offered to develop the aims,
interests and skills of the assistant and focus these toward a
career path in music industry. Via a combination of assisting
work, research and self-directed projects the assistant will be
actively involved in all manner of tasks in our studio. As the
sound studio sits within the Depot Artspace, a valuable part
of this will be the experience of being involved in the Depot’s
diverse wider community. This includes the Depot’s practical/
business and media related workshops (Depot’s PACE
program), as well as our 3 Art galleries, Jam Radio and the
Cultural Icons Project. This balance is intended to encourage
a holistic working practice and to furthermore manage this
in relation to other jobs, study etc, and to aid in their own
development and responsibilities as individuals and members of
the wider community.
Though it is a requirement of this internship to have previous
training or experience in the technical field of music production,
an internship at Depot Artspace (Depot Sound) has the faculty
to equip and encourage students with a wide range of skills and
experience within a compact time frame.
The basic structure of the course will to be to assist in the day
to day running of the studio essentially being trained on the job
and completing tasks outlined in an ‘Intern Handbook’ which is
designed to take the student from the most simple through to
the most complicated of studio tasks. Beginning with a glossary
of technical terms, designing a technical schematic of the studio
architecture and assisting on jobs, the fi nal culmination of this
learning/training will eventuate in the intern fully producing a
band or artists work – from the point of marketing, through to
pre-production meetings, recording, mixing and post-production.
The expected outcome at the conclusion of the program is that
the intern not only has the technical ability to produce music,
he/she also has knowledge of small business via working in
a dynamic community/commercial music studio and has also
gained confi dence with respect to the current demanding
climate of creative industries in general.

Please feel free to email Mark at the studio for more details...
